18:00 airport pickup. 19:30 opening vegan banquet.
Guangzhou has been a city for more than 2,200 years, and one of the departure points of the Maritime Silk Road since the Tang. “Eat in Guangzhou” and “a thousand-year trading capital” are two faces of one thread. Here vegan is everyday life — temple dim sum, slow vegan soups on street corners — not for faith, simply for taste. We land tonight and begin with an old tea.
AM: Guangxiao Temple lecture & temple lunch. PM: Michelin-recommended vegan dinner.
Guangxiao Temple is Guangzhou's oldest, where Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan, had his head shaved; its vegetarian tradition runs a thousand years deep. This morning, a talk beside the sutra library, then a temple meal where nothing is over-seasoned — the point is original flavour. In the afternoon, a Michelin Bib Gourmand vegan restaurant shows the same idea in modern form.
AM: Visit 2 leading Guangzhou vegan brands. PM: hands-on cooking salon.
Guangzhou's vegan scene is among the densest in China — chain restaurants, neighbourhood kitchens, vegan bakeries, plant-based R&D, and people who have been at it for over a decade. This morning we meet two leading founders and hear about supply chains, costs and customers; in the afternoon we cook, which is how the thread really connects.
AM: Nanfeng ancient kiln & Foshan vegan heritage. PM: Xiqiao Mountain.
Nanfeng Kiln in Foshan was first fired in the Ming dynasty and its flame has not gone out for over 500 years — it is called “a living fossil of ceramics”. Next door, Lingnan Tiandi keeps its wok-ear gables and grey-brick lanes, along with a few old vegetarian establishments. In the afternoon, Xiqiao Mountain: volcanic rock at 340 m sheltering more than 4,000 plant species, a rare classroom of nature beside a city.
AM: Create-your-own-dish cooking salon. PM: tea time & free exploration. Closing banquet.
In Guangzhou, “drinking tea” is a verb — you sit down, drink slowly, talk business along the way, and half a day is gone. Today's cooking salon hands out no recipes, only seasonal ingredients; you compose a meal yourself. The afternoon is that same tea table: an old pot, a few vegan pastries, and the rest of the day free to walk this city on your own.
Breakfast & airport transfer.
The last day departs from Baiyun Airport. With an hour or two to spare, slip into an old-town teahouse for one more morning tea — shrimp dumplings become vegetable ones, rice rolls become seasonal greens; the form is unchanged, the core is new. Which is the point of the journey: vegan is not a substitute, it is another kind of complete.
